Boudh: A frenzied rush for precious stone is being witnessed in Khuntiapada village of Odisha’s Boudh district. As rumours of gemstone discovery underneath the soil spread in the region, people of all ages from the village as well as neighbouring areas are making a beeline for Khuntiapada in hope of striking it rich.
Some local traders are buying these stones for 2,500 to 3,000 rupees per kg. However, the nature of the stones as well as their price is yet to be ascertained by the authorities. In fact, despite being informed about the discovery of “semi precious” stones in the region, no government authority was seen at the site till date.
According to reports, a local contractor happened to come across some “semi precious” stones while undertaking road work in Khuntiapada village. Once the news spread, scores of men, women and children have been flocking the place to dig stones.
It’s been three days since these stones were first discovered but no official was seen in the area. On being contacted, Boudh Mining Department official Manahoor Mahanat said he has not received any such information. Mahant, however, said the department would visit the site and undertake an investigation to unravel the value of the stones.
