Bhubaneswar: BJD MP Mamata Mohanta today stepped down as the member of the Upper House and resigned from the primary membership of the party citing that the party doesn’t require her services any more.
Mohanta, who was elected to the Rajya Sabha from BJD in 2020, sent her resignation to Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar who accepted her letter with immediate effect.
Dhankhar also informed the Upper House regarding the resignation of Mohanta. “I have to inform the members that I have received a letter today from honrable member Smt Mamata Mohanta, represneting the State of Odisha resigning her seat in the Rajya Sabha. She has resigned her seat by writing to the chairman. I find the same to be constitutionally in order. I have accepted the resignation of Smt Mamata Mohanta, member repressing the State of Odisha with immediate effect.”
In her resignation letter, she mentioned “I have taken this decision consciously”.

The popular leader of the Kudumi community from Mayurbhanj also resigned from the primary membership of the BJD. In her letter to BJD president Naveen Patnaik, Mohanta stated that she felt her services were not required any more in the party.
“I feel that there is no requirement of the services of myself as well as my community in the Biju Janata Dal. Therefore, I have taken this hard decision in the public interest,” Mohanta wrote.
Mohanta’s tenure in the Rajya Sabha was scheduled to end in April 2026.
