Dhenkanal: A man was arrested on Sunday for allegedly shooting his brother-in-law during a hunting trip in Dhenkanal district, police said.
The accused, identified as Ramesh Chandra Naik (53), a resident of Alusingh village under Rasol police station, allegedly shot Gobinda Chandra Naik in the early hours of February 23.
According to police reports, the two men often went hunting together. On the night of the incident, at around 2:30 am, Ramesh arrived at Gobinda’s farmhouse with a country-made single-barrel muzzle-loading (SBML) firearm and invited him to go hunting.
After walking nearly 500 meters into a nearby forest, Ramesh reportedly asked Gobinda to shake the bushes to drive out wild animals. As Gobinda complied, Ramesh mistook the movement for that of an animal and fired his gun. The bullet struck Gobinda, causing fatal injuries. Family members initially reported the incident as an accident.
However, a detailed police investigation revealed inconsistencies in their statements, leading to the arrest of the accused.
Further investigation is underway.
