Raurkela: A 58-year-old man was charred to death after a fire broke out in his room while he was asleep at Madhusudan Pali in the Railway Colony area here late Sunday night.
The deceased was identified as Jitendra Saha (58). His son, Rohit Saha, who was sleeping in another room of the house, had a narrow escape.
According to reports, the incident occurred around 1.30 am when neighbours noticed flames coming out of the room where Jitendra was sleeping. They raised an alarm and informed the fire services while making attempts to douse the flames and rescue him.
However, the room was locked from the inside, making it difficult for the neighbours to reach Jitendra. By the time fire services personnel arrived at the spot, Jitendra had already died after sustaining severe burn injuries.
On being informed, Plantsite police reached the spot, recovered the body and sent it to Raurkela Government Hospital (RGH) for postmortem. Police have registered an unnatural death case and started an investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the fire.
