Bhubaneswar: An elderly man died after being hit by a speeding truck when he was on his way to celebrate his granddaughter’s birthday in Keonjhar district on Thursday.
The deceased, identified as Sarat Chandra Nayak, was riding a bike with his wife Mamata, when a truck collided with them near Kolimati village under Anandapur Tehsil in Keonjhar district.
Nayak, a resident of Khalur village under Karanjia police station in Mayurbhanj district, was going to his daughter’s house in Jajpur Road to celebrate their granddaughter’s birthday when the mishap took place.
According to eyewitnesses, Nayak was trying to overtake a bus when the truck, which was following behind, hit them. As a result, both Nayak and his wife were thrown off the bike. Nayak suffered severe injuries while his wife sustained minor injuries after being hit by the truck.
Upon being informed, Ghasipura police reached the scene and took them to Anandapur Hospital, where Nayak was declared dead and his wife is being treated.
Meanwhile, police have seized the truck and bike involved.
