Jeypore: A special POCSO fast track court in Koraput district on Monday sentenced a 52-year-old man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping a minor girl.
The Ad-hoc Additional District and Sessions Judge of the Jeypore Fast Track Special Court, Pragnya Nalini Mishra, convicted Budu alias Jagabandhu Nag of Chikma village under Borigumma police station limits on the basis of testimonies of seven witnesses.
The court sentenced the convict to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) and imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 under Section 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Sections 4(2) and 4(6) of the POCSO Act. In default of payment of the fine, he will have to undergo an additional one month of rigorous imprisonment.
The court also awarded him two years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1,000 under Section 351(3) of the BNS for threatening the minor victim. Failure to pay the fine would attract an additional two months of rigorous imprisonment.
Besides the punishment, the court directed the government to provide compensation of Rs 6 lakh to the victim through the District Legal Services Authority, apart from the fine amount realised from the convict.
According to the prosecution, the incident took place on September 30, 2024, in Chikma village under Borigumma police station area when the victim’s parents were away from home. The accused allegedly entered the house, threatened the minor with a knife and repeatedly raped her.
