Bhubaneswar: Keonjhar Fast Track Court has sentenced a person to undergo three years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) for attempting to rape a minor girl in 2017.
Judge Bijay Kumar Mishra also imposed a fine of Rs 3,000 on the accused identified as Bijay Nayak of Ankalpada village under Pandapada police limits.
On failing to pay the fine amount, he will undergo an additional one year of imprisonment, read the judgement order.
The court has further asked the accused to pay a compensation of Rs 1 lakh to the victim.
According to a petition, the parents of the victim had gone to watch an opera leaving their two daughters at home. Taking advantage of it, Bijay tried to outrage the modesty of the victim after barging into the house. The victim’s younger sister woke up listening to her sister’s scream. She came out of the house and called her parents.
Bijay was trying to flee the scene when villagers caught them. Based on a complaint filed by the victim’s parents, Pandapada police registered a case in this connection and forwarded him to court.
The court pronounced the order after hearing the statements of nine witnesses.
