Bhubaneswar: The Housing and Urban Development Department has directed all Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in Odisha to remain on high alert and undertake advance preparedness measures in view of the forecast of heavy rainfall in the coming days.
ULBs, particularly those in southern districts, have been asked to closely monitor low-lying and waterlogging-prone areas and take proactive steps to deal with possible flooding and other rain-related contingencies. Municipal Commissioners and Executive Officers have been directed to keep Rapid Action Teams (RATs) ready for immediate deployment and ensure that MPCS and other temporary shelters are available for use, including for evacuation of people from vulnerable areas when required.
The department has also directed ULBs to ensure the operational readiness of dewatering pumps, machinery and other essential equipment, besides adequate manpower for prompt response to waterlogging and flooding. The ULBs have been asked to strictly follow the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and instructions issued by the Special Relief Commissioner and the H&UD Department, while maintaining close coordination with district administrations and other line departments.
