Balasore: A heart-wrenching incident has come to light in the Arad Bazaar under Sahadevkhunta police station in Balasore district, where a man’s refusal to perform the last rites of his wife has left her body unattended for four days.

According to reports, Chhabirani Dey, separated wife of Srustidhar Dey, passed away on November 9 due to cardiac arrest, but her husband has been refusing to perform her last rites. As a result, the body of Chhabirani has been rotting since four days.

It is learnt that Srustidhar, who is a retired regional manager of a nationalised bank, insisted that he would not participate in any funeral rituals as the couple had been legally divorced. With the woman having no one in her family, villagers detained Srustidhar, asking him to stay near the body until their son returns from Canada.

Meanwhile, police have arrived at the scene and are investigating the matter. The villagers are waiting for the son’s return to proceed with the cremation.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with many questioning the husband’s lack of empathy.
