Sambalpur: A special POCSO court in Sambalpur today sentenced a man to death for raping and murdering an eight-year-old girl in Jamankira area of Sambalpur.
The court found Prashant Baghar guilty of raping and killing a minor girl in his village at Kasada under Jamankira police limits.
The court also directed Baghar to pay a fine of Rs 1 lakh. In default of payment, he would undergo further one-year imprisonment, a government lawyer said.
In 2022, Prashant had raped the minor girl and hacked her to death. He had roamed around his village with her severed head.
Villagers raised a hue and cry over the ghastly activities. Baghara got panicked by the villagers’ shouting and threw the severed head before running away from the spot.
The villagers had chased, captured and tied him up. On being informed, a team from Jamankira police station had rushed to the scene and arrested him.
