Nilagiri (Balasore): In a shocking incident reported from Balasore district, a man allegedly attempted to burn his wife, minor son and mother-in-law alive by pouring petrol on them following a family dispute. The three victims narrowly escaped death after local villagers intervened in time. Police have detained the accused.
The incident took place in Santaragadia village under Nilagiri police limits at the residence of Bhaskar Swain.
According to sources, the accused, Maheshwar Patra of Kahalia village under Nilagiri NAC, had married Jyotirani Swain around one-and-a-half years ago. He had reportedly been subjecting his wife to regular harassment over dowry demands. Following her pregnancy, Jyotirani had been staying at her parental home, where Maheshwar was also residing.
On Saturday, an altercation reportedly escalated, following which Maheshwar allegedly poured petrol on his wife, their child, and his mother-in-law. He then turned on a domestic gas cylinder, shut the door, and attempted to set them ablaze.
Hearing their cries for help, neighbours rushed to the house and managed to rescue the victims before any fatal harm could occur. The injured were immediately taken to Nilagiri Hospital for treatment.
Subsequently, the victims lodged a complaint at Nilagiri police station. Police have detained the accused and initiated an investigation. He is currently being interrogated.
The incident has triggered tension in the locality, with residents expressing shock over the brutal attempt.
