Bhubaneswar: Barbil police on Saturday arrested a person on charges of killing his pregnant girlfriend whose body was recovered from Soyabali forest under Barbil police limits on April 5.
The accused has been identified as Satyaban Behera.
According to sources, despite having two wives the accused allegedly developed a love affair with a girl belonging to Koida in Sundargarh district. Satyaban reportedly established an illicit relationship with the girl on the pretext of marriage and impregnated her.
When Satyaban’s girlfriend pressurized him for marriage, the latter hatched a plot to eliminate her. As per the plan, he asked the girl to elope with him. Satyaban eloped with his girlfriend on April 5 night and brought her to a temple where they took shelter.
The accused reportedly took his girlfriend to a forest near Jateswar temple and killed her by slitting her throat in the wee hours of April 5.
Satyaban hanged the body of his girlfriend in a tree to give it a name of suicide and fled the scene.
Police recovered the body from the forest on April 9 and sent it for post-mortem.
Following the arrest of Satyaban, police took the accused to the forest and recreated the crime scene. Meanwhile, police forwarded the accused to the court.
