Nabarangpur: A 20-year-old married man and a minor girl were found hanging from a tree in Mokian gram panchayat under Papadahandi block of Nabarangpur district on Thursday, police said.
The deceased were identified as Pabitra Bhatra and a minor girl, who was reportedly the daughter of one of his relatives.
According to family members, Bhatra had married around four months ago and had recently left his wife at her parents’ house for the Nuakhai festival.
Bhatra had dinner at his home on Wednesday night and went to sleep. However, when he was found missing on Thursday morning, his family launched a search for him.
Around the same time, the minor girl was also found missing from her home, prompting her family members to search for her.
Later, some villagers spotted the two hanging from a tree and informed their families and the police.
Police recovered the bodies and sent them for post-mortem examination. An investigation has been launched to ascertain the circumstances leading to their deaths.
Police suspect that the two may have died by suicide, but the exact reason behind the suspected extreme step has not yet been established.
