Bhubaneswar: The number of arrests has gone up in connection with the violent face-off between police and protesting members of online cab/auto drivers’ association members at Master Canteen Square here.
As per sources, 113 drivers have been arrested so far in connection with the assault and vandalism. The arrests were made in three phases following the incident on Wednesday. Those arrested have been booked under serious sections of the BNS including 115, 126 and 109 for assault, violence, destruction of public property and rioting. Police have so far seized 354 vehicles used in the illegal blockade.
It is learnt that 60 of those detained were later released after they were found to have not been involved in violence and had shown good behavior.
Kharavel police have registered seven cases in connection with the incident. Around 15 vehicles, including a ‘Mo Bus’ and a police van, were damaged during the violence.
It is pertinent to mention that the road blockade at Master Canteen Square caused major disruption to public movement. Expressing concern over it, the Transport Department has initiated action to cancel the permits of all vehicles involved in the disruption. The Bhubaneswar-1 RTO has issued show-cause notices to all registered owners and permit holders, asking them to appear for a personal hearing at the RTO office.
Preliminary investigation based on police records, CCTV footage and seizure lists revealed that more than 400 autorickshaws were used to block the road. Police have identified the vehicles and seized 354 of them so far. Officials said strict action will be taken against those found participating in the unlawful protest.
