Bhubaneswar: After incessant rain wreaked havoc in the Mayurbhanj district, authorities of the Kala dam opened one gate to release excess water.
According to sources, the dam’s water level had risen significantly due to heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas, surpassing the danger mark of 77.70 meters.
According to Assistant Executive Engineer, the dam is currently receiving 37.24 cubic meters of water per second, while 72.23 cubic meters per second are being released through one gate. Officials have warned that another gate may be opened if necessary, considering the continued rainfall.
The increased water level has affected various rivers in the region due to low pressure over the Bay of Bengal, prompting authorities to consider opening gates of two dams. Residents in low-lying areas have been alerted about the potential impact and advised to remain cautious.
