Bhubaneswar: Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari is scheduled to visit Mayurbhanj district on Saturday to assess the losses incurred due to the recent thunderstorm and hailstorm that ravaged various parts of the district.

During his visit, Pujari will tour affected areas and review the situation on the ground.

According to preliminary estimates, approximately 4,775 people from 47 villages in 19 gram panchayats of Bangriposhi, Bisoi, Kuliana, Sarasakana, and Karanjia blocks in Mayurbhanj district have been affected by the hailstorm that occurred during the Kalbaisakhi storm.

The storm has left a trail of destruction, with 350 kutcha houses completely destroyed, 11 houses seriously damaged, 295 houses partially destroyed, and four cowsheds destroyed. Furthermore, the hailstorm has also damaged power supply, water supply, and transportation infrastructure.

In response to the disaster, the administration has set up relief centres in various locations to provide shelter to the affected people. Additionally, 127 polythene rolls have been distributed to those whose houses have been destroyed.

Five medical teams have been deployed to provide immediate medical care to the affected population. Field officers are currently conducting damage assessments, and the district administration has assured that government assistance will be provided to the affected individuals in accordance with government regulations once the assessment is complete.

Notably, Kalabaisakhi storms were reported in various areas of Bamanghati sub-district in Mayurbhanj district on Thursday evening. Several people were injured due to thunderstorms, hailstorms, and heavy rainfall in areas such as Rairangpur Municipality, Rairangpur Block, Bijatsala, Kusumi, Jamda, and Behalda. The storms also caused significant damage to roofs and disrupted livelihoods.
