Berhampur: MKCG Medical College and Hospital here has imposed a ₹25,000 penalty each on two House Surgeons following allegations of ragging a fourth-year MBBS student.
Dean Dr. Suchitra Dash, representing the institution’s anti-ragging committee, confirmed the disciplinary action while clarifying that while a verbal altercation occurred, no physical assault was substantiated.
The incident, which took place on May 12, prompted the affected student to file a formal complaint the next day. After investigation, the anti-ragging committee concluded that the House Surgeons had engaged in misconduct, warranting the financial penalty.
This marks yet another ragging-related controversy at MKCG. In November 2024, five fourth-year MBBS students were expelled from the hostel and suspended for six months for harassing juniors. Earlier, in February 2024, two other fourth-year students faced a two-month suspension for ragging a second-year student.
The medical college has gained notoriety for its recurring ragging issues. A recent report by the Society Against Violence in Education (SAVE) titled ‘State of Ragging in India 2022–24’ ranked MKCG among the top 12 medical colleges with the highest number of ragging complaints.
Data from the UGC’s National Anti-Ragging Helpline revealed that 25 complaints were lodged against the institution between 2022 and December 2024.
