Balasore: In a shocking incident of mob violence, three members of a family were tied to a tree and brutally beaten by villagers in Mallichua village under Mahumuhan Panchayat in Balasore over allegations of witchcraft.

The victims, identified as Chaita Singh, his wife Muni Singh, and brother-in-law Tuni Singh, were subjected to merciless assault by the villagers.

According to reports, the ordeal began last Saturday when Chaita Singh was worshipping at his home. The villagers opposed the worship, accusing him of practising witchcraft that was allegedly causing illnesses and deaths in the village. When Chaita’s family members tried to defend him, the villagers tied all three to a tree and beat them mercilessly, keeping them captive for over 24 hours.

The situation came to light when Chaita’s nephew lodged a complaint at the Soro police station. The police intervened and rescued the victims after prolonged negotiations with the villagers. Chaita Singh was admitted to the hospital for treatment.

The police have initiated an investigation into the incident and are working to identify the perpetrators.
