Bhubaneswar: Odisha is expected to receive the southwest monsoon earlier than usual this year, according to Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General of the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
“Odisha typically sees monsoon onset between June 12 and 14. This year, it is likely to arrive earlier. We will announce the exact date in the next two days,” Dr. Mohapatra told reporters on Monday.
The IMD chief attributed the early arrival to favorable atmospheric conditions and the likely formation of a low-pressure area, which could enhance rainfall activity in the state. He added that Odisha is currently witnessing pre-monsoon showers.
“The monsoon has already reached Kerala eight days ahead of schedule and is advancing rapidly. It has also covered Mumbai and the northeastern states,” he noted.
The IMD forecasts monsoon entry into southeastern Odisha within the next three days, followed by coverage of the northeastern states, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim.
