Nabarangpur: In a shocking incident, a young nursing student from Raighar block in Nabarangpur district allegedly attempted suicide after private photographs of her were leaked on social media by a youth reportedly pursuing her in a one-sided affair.
The girl, a B.Sc. Nursing student studying in Jeypore and residing in a hostel, consumed poison on Tuesday, unable to cope with the humiliation following the circulation of the images. The accused has been identified as Satyajit Sarkar, a B.Sc. Agriculture student from a neighbouring village.
According to reports, on July 13, while the victim had gone to the Jeypore market, Satyajit allegedly assaulted her in public, causing visible injuries to her eyes and face. Though the matter reached Jeypore Town Police Station, both were reportedly let off following a compromise.
On July 15, the girl lodged an FIR at the same police station and returned home with her guardian. However, Satyajit allegedly uploaded private photos and videos of the victim on social media soon after.
Unable to bear the trauma, the girl consumed weedicide at her home on July 17. She was rushed to Umerkote CHC by her family and later shifted to a hospital in Raipur as her condition deteriorated. With no significant improvement, doctors advised the family to take her home on July 21.
The victim is now battling for her life at home.
On Tuesday, her grandfather lodged a written complaint at Raighar Police Station. Following this, police recorded the victim’s statement and launched an investigation.
Meanwhile, the family has urged police to arrest the accused without delay.
