Bhubaneswar: A second-year B.Sc. Nursing student from Raighar in Odisha’s Nabarangpur district, who had been battling for life for over three weeks after allegedly being harassed over a one-sided love affair, succumbed to her injuries today at AIIMS Bhubaneswar.

Hospital sources confirmed that the postmortem will be conducted tomorrow, after which the body will be sent to her native village. Her last rites are likely to be performed on Monday.

According to reports, the 21-year-old took the extreme step after enduring months of harassment from a youth identified as Satyajit Sarkar. They alleged that the accused made obscene videos of the victim viral on social media, subjecting her to severe mental and physical trauma.

The ordeal began on July 13 when the accused, said to be obsessed with her, allegedly assaulted her in public while she was shopping at a local market. The attack left her with facial injuries, prompting her to file a complaint. Although the police detained Satyajit, he was later released on conditional bail.

Enraged, the accused allegedly circulated intimate photos and videos of the victim with her male friend on social media. Unable to cope with the public humiliation, she reportedly consumed pesticide on July 17.

She was first treated at Umerkote Community Health Centre, then shifted to Kondagaon and Raipur hospitals. As her condition worsened, doctors advised her family to take her home. On July 21, after her brother lodged another complaint, she was re-admitted to hospital, eventually being shifted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar.

Police have since arrested two persons in connection with the case, and further investigation is underway.
