Bhubaneswar: Leader of the Opposition in the Odisha Assembly and BJD president Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday expressed deep grief over the untimely death of young journalist Sheela Patnaik in a tragic road accident in Puri district.
“The news of the untimely demise of young journalist Sheela Patnaik is mournful. In such a sorrowful time, I convey my condolences to the bereaved family members and pray for the eternal peace of her departed soul,” Patnaik posted on X.
The condolence message came hours after two women, including the journalist, were killed in a road accident near Mangalpur Square under Pipli police limits in Puri district.
According to reports, the incident occurred in the morning when the two women were travelling towards Puri on a scooter. The scooter reportedly slipped after encountering sand scattered on the road, causing both riders to fall. A speeding private bus approaching from behind allegedly ran over them.
Sheela Patnaik, who was associated with a private news channel, died on the spot. The other woman sustained critical injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
Following the incident, police detained the driver of the private bus and seized the vehicle. An investigation has been launched to ascertain the exact circumstances leading to the accident.
The tragic death of the young journalist has sparked grief among media circles and renewed concerns over road safety and reckless driving in the state.
