Bhubaneswar: Former Chief Minister and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) President Naveen Patnaik on Monday expressed serious concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in the state, particularly in Berhampur.
In a strongly worded tweet, Naveen Patnaik described the recent brutal attack on a youth with a sharp weapon in broad daylight at Ambika Nagar in Berhampur’s Badabazar area as ‘shocking’ and ‘hellish’.
He said, “Just a few days ago, the inhuman attack on a youth and a young woman in Berhampur has not left the mind, and this incident has once again terrified the people of Odisha.
Patnaik alleged that ‘Goondaraj’ has spread across Odisha, creating an atmosphere of fear among the people. Even after the police’s threats of encounters, criminals are fearlessly committing crimes on the highways, exposing the utter failure of the governance system.
“The criminals are fearlessly committing crimes even on the highways, exposing the utter failure of the governance system,” he said.
Naveen Patnaik urged the government to become alert immediately and take concrete steps to ensure public safety and restore the rule of law, instead of indulging in “big speeches”.
