Bhubaneswar: During the discussion on the Home Department’s demand in the Odisha Assembly, Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik raised serious concerns about the law and order situation in the state.
Patnaik highlighted several recent incidents that have tarnished Odisha’s reputation for communal harmony and effective governance.
Patnaik pointed to a series of communal incidents in Balasore and other parts of the state, including a recent murder in Khordha district, which he said needed urgent attention. He emphasized that Odisha has historically been known for its communal peace, and preserving this harmony should be a top priority for the state government.
He also criticized the government’s handling of the recent Ratha Yatra, where the deity of Lord Balabhadra was mishandled and tumbled to the ground, shocking millions of devotees.
In addition, Patnaik brought up the recent liquor tragedy in Ganjam district’s Chikiti area, expressing concern over the state’s efforts to combat illicit liquor. He urged the government to take decisive action on these matters.
Patnaik further questioned the government’s response to an incident involving the Governor’s son, who allegedly attacked and humiliated a government officer on duty during the Ratha Yatra.
He posed a critical question to the assembly: “Is the law different for the sons of governors, ministers, MPs, MLAs, or senior officers? Are they immune from prosecution?” He warned that if certain individuals are indeed above the law, the people of Odisha must be informed.
Patnaik contrasted these incidents with the governance during his tenure, asserting that under his leadership, no one was above the law and that such serious matters were not overlooked.
He expressed hope that the current Chief Minister, who also holds the Home portfolio, would address these issues promptly, particularly the recent rape and murder of a minor.
