Bhubaneswar: The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS), New Delhi, has granted recognition for additional postgraduate medical seats in Odisha, providing a major boost to medical education and specialist healthcare services in the state.

According to official information, Sahid Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital (SLNMCH), Koraput, has been approved for four Diplomate of National Board (DNB) seats in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Meanwhile, the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH), Puri, has received approval for two diploma seats in Pediatrics.

The newly sanctioned seats are expected to enhance specialist medical training opportunities within the state while strengthening healthcare delivery, particularly in maternal and child health services.

Officials said the recognition granted by NBEMS would contribute to the development of healthcare infrastructure in both the KBK (undivided Koraput-Bolangir-Kalahandi) region and coastal Odisha. The move is also expected to improve the doctor-patient ratio by increasing the availability of trained specialists in key disciplines.

Welcoming the development, Odisha Health and Family Welfare Minister Mukesh Mahaling expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the approval. He also thanked Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda and Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, stating that their efforts had helped secure the additional seats.

The minister said the expansion of postgraduate medical education capacity would further strengthen Odisha’s healthcare system and improve access to quality medical services for people across the state.
