Baripada (Mayurbhanj): The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) on Tuesday night seized 20 sacks of marijuana worth around Rs 1 crore from an SUV at Bharda Chowk near Kaptipada Nuasahi village in Mayurbhanj district. Five persons were detained in connection with the seizure, while two others managed to flee the spot.
Acting on a tip-off, an NCB special squad kept surveillance on the suspected vehicle and intercepted it while it was passing through Bharda Chowk. During the search, officials found the contraband concealed at the bottom of the SUV, covered with sacks of cabbage in an attempt to evade detection.
The vehicle used for transporting the marijuana was seized. Preliminary investigation revealed that the consignment was being transported from Keonjhar to Baripada via Kaptipada, reports said.
The NCB has launched a manhunt to trace the two absconding accused and is probing possible links to an interstate drug trafficking network.
Further investigation is underway.
