Bhubaneswar: The body of a newborn baby girl was found floating in a pond under Digapahandi block in Ganjam district on Tuesday morning.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage and concern among locals.
According to reports, some women from the village spotted the body in the pond around 6 am and alerted others. The villagers suspect that the baby was likely killed and dumped in the pond by her parents, who were allegedly trying to conceal the birth.
The incident has raised questions about the effectiveness of government schemes aimed at promoting girl child welfare and preventing female infanticide. Despite campaigns like ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’, such incidents continue to occur, highlighting the need for greater awareness and action.
Upon being informed, police have launched an investigation into the matter, but no one has come forward to claim responsibility for the crime. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination.
