Puri: The annual Rath Yatra festival of Lord Jagannath came to a ceremonial close on early Tuesday as the sibling deities—Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra—returned to the sanctum sanctorum of the Shree Jagannath Temple during the sacred Niladri Bije ritual.
The homecoming of the deities marked the culmination of the festival that began on July 16 with the pulling of the three majestic chariots to the Shree Gundicha Temple.
In keeping with long-standing temple traditions, Mahajan servitors first escorted the idols of Rama and Krushna from the Taladhwaja chariot and Madan Mohan from the Nandighosh chariot into the temple through the ceremonial Pahandi procession. Lord Sudarshan, the sacred weapon of Lord Jagannath, was then carried from the Darpadalana chariot into the shrine.
The Pahandi ritual continued with the ceremonial entry of Lord Balabhadra, followed by Devi Subhadra and finally Lord Jagannath from their respective chariots amid the resonating chants of devotees, the sound of traditional musical instruments and an atmosphere of devotion.
A key highlight of Niladri Bije was the symbolic encounter between Lord Jagannath and Goddess Mahalaxmi at the Jaya Vijaya Dwara near the sanctum sanctorum. According to temple tradition, the goddess, displeased at being left behind while the sibling deities undertook their annual journey to the Gundicha Temple, initially barred Lord Jagannath from entering the shrine.
Seeking to pacify his divine consort, Lord Jagannath offered rasagolas as a gesture of reconciliation. The offering symbolically appeased Goddess Mahalaxmi, who then allowed him to enter the temple, completing the final ritual of the Rath Yatra.
The Niladri Bije ritual is regarded as a celebration of harmony, forgiveness and mutual respect. The symbolic reconciliation between Lord Jagannath and Goddess Mahalaxmi is believed to convey the values of understanding and compassion in marital relationships, adding a profound social message to one of Odisha’s most revered religious traditions.
