No Respite From Sweltering Heat: Mercury Soars Above 40°C In 19 Places Across Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Scorching heat continued to sweep across Odisha on Tuesday with as many as 19 places recording maximum temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius.

Jharsuguda emerged as the hottest place in the state, recording a high of 43.6°C, followed by Sambalpur at 42.5°C, Titlagarh at 42.5°C, Hirakud at 42.4°C, Bolangir at 42.2°C, and Angul at 42.1°C. Other places that crossed the 40-degree mark included Sundargarh (41.5°C), Talcher (41.5°C), Sonepur (41.7°C), Bhawanipatna (40.5°C), Boudh (40.7°C), Dhenkanal (41.0°C), Bargarh (41.0°C), Nuapada (41.0°C), Rourkela (41.0°C), Nayagarh (40.0°C), Bhadrak (40.0°C) and Khordha (40.0°C). Malkangiri recorded 38.8°C.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Warning (Be Aware) for several districts. Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning and gusty surface winds (speed reaching 30-40 kmph) is very likely to occur in the afternoon or evening hours at one or two places over the districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack and Jagatsinghpur.

Hot and humid conditions are also very likely to prevail at isolated places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam and Gajapati.

The IMD has forecasted no large change in maximum day temperatures during the next four days across Odisha. Thereafter, the temperature is likely to fall by 2-3 degrees Celsius.
