Bhubaneswar: Thunderstorms accompanied by rain hit several places in Odisha on Sunday evening bringing the much-awaited relief from the scorching heatwave prevailing across the state for the last week.
According to reports, one person was killed and two others were critically injured when a tree fell on them during a thunderstorm due to Nor’wester in Chheligada in Odisha’s Gajapati district on Sunday evening. On the other hand, Khairar town in Nuapada district was swept by strong winds and sandstorms caused by northwesterly this afternoon and subsequent rain.
While the identities of the deceased and the injured in Chheligada are yet to be ascertained. The three were way on their way to Chheligada from Padampur village when the tree fell on them. Locals rescued the three from under the tree and rushed to a nearby medical centre where the doctors declared one of them dead.
In Khairar, the Nor’wester uprooted several trees obstructing traffic for some time. Eventually, the situation was brought to normal after the intervention of the Fire Services personnel. The strong winds blew away the thatched roofs of several houses and damaged shops and houses.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has alerted that the day temperature (maximum temperature) is likely to abate from tomorrow followed by moderate thunderstorms and rain in several places.
