Bhubaneswar: Odisha now ranks fourth in fish production in the country.
From 2.60 lakh MT annually, fish production in the State over the last two decades has increased to 9.91 lakh MT in 2021-22, making it rank fourth in fish production in the country.
This remarkable growth has been achieved due to the implementation of a favourable policy for fish farming by the State government, use of latest technology, farming of improved varieties of fish, and use of fish feed, said Fisheries & Animal Resources Development Minister Ranendra Pratap Swain.
Speaking at a webinar ‘Fish Farming in India & Strengthening of Marine Food Processing’ organised by ASSOCHAM as the Chief Guest Swain stated that while in 2000-01 fish production in the State was worth Rs 1,047 crore it has increased by around 10 times and Rs 10,825 crore in 2020-21.
The pisciculture sector now accounts for 2.4 per cent of the Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP), Swain said.
Brackish water shrimp production has also increased by around six times, he added.
