Nuapada: A man has been arrested in Nuapada district of Odisha for allegedly faking his kidnapping to extort money from his father.
The suspect, identified as Baikuntha Nayak from Boirabhadi village under Jonk police station, was apprehended along with his accomplices, said Nuapada SP Gundala Reddy Raghavendra briefing reporters here on Friday.
Baikuntha’s father, Jayram Nayak, had recently sold a portion of his land to repay a loan taken by Baikuntha’s younger brother, Pabitra Nayak.
Pabitra had borrowed approximately three lakh rupees for a business venture, which ultimately failed, leaving him unable to repay the loan.
Upon discovering that his father had received a substantial amount of money from the land sale, Baikuntha devised a plan to extort the funds.
On July 2, Baikuntha enlisted the help of friends to stage his kidnapping. Three days later, they sent a video to Jayram showing Baikuntha being tortured, accompanied by a ransom demand. Distressed, Jayram immediately filed a complaint with the police.
“From our investigation, we suspected Baikuntha’s involvement in the kidnapping,” stated SP Gundala Reddy Raghavendra. “Further scrutiny of the video and subsequent questioning led to Baikuntha’s confession and arrest, revealing the details of the planned extortion.”
