Bhubaneswar: In a significant move to bolster irrigation, flood control, and water use efficiency, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi earmarked a total allocation of Rs. 16,273 crore for these critical sectors in the Annual Budget 2025-26 on Monday. The budget aims to address long-standing challenges and enhance agricultural productivity in the state.
The budget includes Rs. 880 crore for the construction of in-stream storage structures, a move expected to fulfill the long-felt irrigation needs of farmers across the state.
Additionally, Rs. 1,318 crore has been allocated for the second phase of the Parvati Giri Mega Lift Irrigation scheme, which aims to expand irrigation coverage and ensure water availability in drought-prone areas.
To revive defunct community lift irrigation projects, Rs. 190 crore has been set aside, ensuring their operational efficiency and benefiting local farming communities.
Under the Mukhya Mantri Adibandha Tiari Yojana (MATY), Rs. 350 crore has been allocated for the construction and maintenance of irrigation infrastructure, particularly focusing on small water bodies.
To mitigate the impact of floods, Rs. 1,036 crore has been allocated for strengthening flood control embankments and improving drainage systems in vulnerable areas. The Mukhyamantri Canal Lining Yojana has received Rs. 430 crore to reduce water loss and improve the efficiency of canal systems. Furthermore, Rs. 240 crore has been allocated under the Nabakrushna Choudhury Secha Unayana Yojana for the modernization of existing irrigation projects.
Under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana, Rs. 539 crore has been allocated under the “Har Khet Ko Pani” component to ensure water reaches every farm.
The Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme (AIBP) has been granted Rs. 1,786 crore to expedite the completion of ongoing irrigation projects, while Rs. 1,315 crore has been earmarked for the Water Sector Infrastructure Development Programme (WSIDP) to develop water infrastructure across the state.
For climate-resilient agriculture, Rs. 380 crore has been allocated for the Odisha Integrated Irrigation Project for Climate Change Resilient Agriculture (OIIPCRA), focusing on sustainable water use in farming. Additionally, Rs. 300 crore has been allocated for the second phase of the Rengali Irrigation Project, which aims to enhance water availability in the region.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi emphasized that the budget allocations reflect the government’s commitment to addressing water scarcity, improving irrigation facilities, and mitigating flood risks.
