Odisha Braces For Heat Wave And Humid Conditions; Yellow Warnings Issued

Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Special Bulletin on Wednesday  warning of heat wave conditions and warm nights over parts of interior Odisha on May 27 and 28, coupled with hot and humid weather persisting across large parts of the state until May 31.

According to the bulletin released at 1530 hrs IST, maximum temperatures are already running above normal, with Titilagarh in Bolangir district recording the highest temperature of 44.5°C. Warm night conditions have been observed in Sambalpur and Bolangir districts.

Maximum temperatures were appreciably above normal (3-4°C) at isolated places and above normal (2-3°C) at many places in interior Odisha.

A slight fall in maximum temperature (about 2°C) was recorded in parts of south interior Odisha. Warm night conditions prevailed at one or two places in Sambalpur and Bolangir.

District-wise Warnings (Yellow – Be Aware)

Day 1 (27th May 2026): Heat wave likely at isolated places over Sambalpur, Boudh, Sonepur, and Bolangir. Hot and humid conditions likely at isolated places over Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghapur, Cuttack, Puri, Khurda, Gajapati, Ganjam, Jajpur, Nayagarh, Kalahandi, and Nuapada. Warm nights likely in Sambalpur and Bolangir.

Day 2 (28th May 2026): Heat wave likely at isolated places over Sambalpur, Boudh, Sonepur, Bolangir, Nuapada, and Kalahandi. Hot and humid conditions likely over several coastal districts.

Days 3 to 5 (29th–31st May 2026): Hot and humid conditions are expected to continue at isolated places across coastal districts including Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghapur, Cuttack, Puri, Khurda, Gajapati, Ganjam, Jajpur, and Nayagarh.

The IMD has highlighted that while the heat is generally tolerable for the general public, it poses health risks to vulnerable groups such as infants, the elderly, pregnant women, and people with existing medical conditions.
