Bhubaneswar: The deep depression over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a cyclonic storm Montha, informed the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

According to IMD, the system is centred approximately 860 km from Gopalpur and 710 km from Kakinada. The cyclonic storm is expected to further intensify into a severe cyclonic storm by Tuesday morning, October 28.

Although Cyclone Montha is not expected to have a direct impact on Odisha, the state is likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall in southern and coastal districts from October 28 to 29. The rainfall is expected to start from Monday, with the government taking proactive measures to mitigate the impact.

The government has activated its disaster response mechanism, gearing up for the impending cyclone with a comprehensive preparedness plan in place. To ensure the safety of those in vulnerable areas, the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) has deployed 128 teams to facilitate timely evacuations.

In a bid to maintain essential services and monitor the situation effectively, the government has directed officials and employees in 9 districts to remain on high alert.
