Odisha Braces For Week-Long Wet Spell; Red Warning Issued For Aug 30-31

Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a series of rainfall and thunderstorm warnings for Odisha spanning from August 30 to September 5, 2026, with Red and Orange alerts for multiple districts in the coming days.

For August 30, a Red Warning has been issued for heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places with extremely heavy rainfall at one or two places over Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Kendrapada and Mayurbhanj districts. An Orange Warning is in force for heavy to very heavy rainfall at one or two places over Jajpur, Jagatsinghpur, Kataka, Angola, Dhenkanal and Kendujhar.

Additionally, a Yellow Warning has been issued for heavy rainfall at one or two places over Sundargada, Bargada, Sambalpur, Debagada, Subarnapur, Boudh, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha and Nayagada. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds (40-50 kmph) are likely over several northern and coastal districts, while winds of 30-40 kmph are expected over many other parts of the state.

For August 31, Red Warning continues for Baleshwar, Kendujhar and Mayurbhanj with the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places. An Orange Warning has been issued for Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kataka, Sundargada, Sambalpur, Debagada, Anugola and Dhenkanal. Also, a Yellow Warning is applicable for Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Jharsuguda, Baragada, Subarnapur, Boudh, Nuapada, Nabarangapur, Puri, Khordha and Nayagada.  Also, thunderstorms with lightning and strong winds are also forecast over many districts.

For September 1, an Orange Warning is in place for heavy to very heavy rainfall at one or two places over Sundargada, Jharsuguda, Bargada, Sambalpur and Nuapada. A Yellow Warning covers Baleshwar, Debagada, Anugola, Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, Subarnapur, Boudh, Balangir, Kalahandi and Kandhamal. Thunderstorm activity with gusty winds is likely across a wide area of the state.

For September 2, an Orange Warning has been issued for Jharsuguda and Baragada districts. Yellow Warning applies to Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Subarnapur, Nuapada and Bolangir. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and winds of 30-50 kmph are expected over several districts.

For September 3, a yellow warning for heavy rainfall remains for Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Subarnapur, Nuapada and Balangir. Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds are likely over these and many other districts of the state.

For September 4 and September 5, a Yellow Warning for heavy rainfall at one or two places will continue over Bargada, Nuapada and Balangir on September 4, and over Bargada on September 5.

The IMD has advised residents, especially in districts under Red and Orange alerts, to remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain, and stay updated with the latest weather bulletins.
