Bhubaneswar: With rapid urbanisation putting pressure on existing drainage infrastructure and leading to recurrent waterlogging and localised flooding, the Odisha Cabinet on Tuesday approved the Urban Storm Water Drainage Management and Improvement Programme (USWDMIP).
The scheme will be implemented with an outlay of Rs 500 crore from the state’s own resources over five years from FY 2026-27 to FY 2030-31.The programme will cover Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) and selected Block Headquarters. Interventions under the scheme include de-siltation, construction of RCC storm water drains, drain covering, restoration of natural drainage channels and linkage with suitable water bodies.
These measures are aimed at improving the capacity and efficiency of urban drainage systems and reducing waterlogging and localised flooding.
According to the Water Resources Department, the scheme will help reduce urban flooding, improve drainage capacity, promote groundwater recharge and enhance public safety and environmental quality, while supporting climate-resilient urban development.
