Bhubaneswar: In a bid to curb helmetless riding and its likely consequences, the Odisha State Transport Authority has decided to empower the common man in Odisha to report such violators through a mobile application.
Citizens can now report traffic violators, especially helmetless driving, through the mParivahan app’s ‘Citizens Sentinel’ option. Citizens need to upload photos or videos of people riding without helmets under the ‘No Helmet Violation’ option and e-challans will be issued to the violators after verification.
While capturing pictures or videos, people reporting the violation need to ensure capturing the vehicle number and the violation clearly, an official informed.
The person’s identity, reporting the violation, will not be disclosed.
In the future, other traffic violations will be added to the Citizen Sentinel option, added the official.
As per data, in 2022, 34% of deaths in road accidents in the state involved two-wheelers. As many as 1695 people lost their lives and 2615 were injured for riding without helmets. Even though wearing a helmet is mandatory for pillion riders, people rarely wear helmets while driving.
