Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government on Saturday reviewed an innovative renewable energy solution that could generate clean power using existing canal infrastructure without requiring additional land.

A high-level meeting chaired by Deputy Chief Minister K V Singh Deo was held at Kharvel Bhavan to examine the potential of Surface Hydro Kinetic (SHK) Turbine technology for the state.

Clean-tech company MACLEC made a presentation on its SHK turbine technology before the Deputy Chief Minister and senior government officials, including Additional Chief Secretary, Energy, Vishal Kumar Dev; OPTCL Chairman and Managing Director Bhaskar Jyoti Sarma; GRIDCO Managing Director Satyapriya Rath; and senior officials from the Water Resources Department, GRIDCO and OHPC.

During the presentation, MACLEC highlighted the strategic advantages of deploying SHK turbines in Odisha, particularly their potential to utilise existing surface water canals for power generation. The company said the technology could contribute to the state’s renewable energy targets without the need for additional land acquisition or allocation.

The technology could also create local employment opportunities, promote infrastructure development in project areas and provide stable grid integration, according to the presentation.

As part of the proposal, MACLEC presented a plan for setting up a 10-MW clean power generation project along a canal in the state. The company sought administrative and infrastructure support from the Energy Department, including allocation rights along suitable canals and streamlined permissions for grid synchronisation and expansion.

The department leadership and the Deputy Chief Minister took note of the proposal and described the concept as interesting and promising for expanding Odisha’s clean energy framework.
