Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has sounded a statewide alert in view of a proposed “Odisha Bandh” scheduled for January 28, called by members of NNKS, NYCS and other organisations over various demands.
In an official communication issued by the Home (Special Section) Department, Special Secretary R.K. Sharma, has directed all Collectors and District Magistrates to take comprehensive preventive and precautionary measures to maintain law and order during the bandh.
According to the letter, the protesting groups are expected to stage dharna, demonstrations and protest meetings across the state, which may disrupt normal life. The government apprehends attempts to forcibly shut down business establishments, market places, petrol pumps, banks, financial institutions, and Central and State government offices, besides courts.
The advisory also warns of possible disruption to vehicular and railway traffic during the bandh. Demonstrations are likely to be organised in front of Collectorates, Regional Transport Offices (RTOs), Odisha Electricity Regulatory Commission (OERC), Tata Power offices, and Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS) across the state. There is also an apprehension of protesters dumping paddy bags at these locations as part of their agitation.
The Home Department has instructed district administrations to remain on high alert and keep the situation under close watch to prevent any untoward incidents. Authorities have also been asked to make adequate arrangements to ensure the smooth functioning of essential services, including government offices and public utilities, during the bandh period.
The state government has reiterated its commitment to maintaining public order and ensuring that essential services remain unaffected during the proposed shutdown.
