Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government is making significant progress toward the early opening of two important medical colleges in Talcher and Phulbani.
The two colleges are the Pabitra Mohan Pradhan Medical College & Hospital in Talcher, Angul, and the Government Medical College & Hospital in Phulbani, Kandhamal. The opening of these institutions is expected to greatly improve medical services and provide much-needed healthcare to local communities.
In a key meeting held on Thursday via video conference, Aswathy S., the Commissioner-cum-Secretary of the Health & Family Welfare Department, chaired an important discussion to review the progress and address ongoing needs for these institutions, according to an official press release.
The meeting focused on ensuring that the medical buildings and equipment are ready, and on identifying any gaps that need to be addressed. The main goal is to get approval from the National Medical Commission (NMC) for the admission of 100 MBBS students in the 2025-26 academic year.
To speed up the process, District Collectors and relevant officers from both districts have been asked to hold regular weekly meetings. This will help quickly address pending tasks and ensure compliance with NMC requirements. This cooperative approach shows the government’s commitment to opening these medical colleges as soon as possible.
The state government is dedicated to improving medical education and healthcare, especially in underserved areas. By fast-tracking the opening of these two medical colleges, the government hopes to improve healthcare infrastructure and increase access to quality medical care throughout Odisha.
The meeting was attended by key officials, including Poma Tudu, Managing Director of OSMCL; Abdaal M. Akhtar, Angul Collector; Amrit Ruturaj, Kandhamal Collector; Bijay Kumar Mohapatra, Director of Health Services; Santosh Mishra, Director of Medical Education & Training; Usharani Sahoo, Additional Secretary; Prof. Dr. Kirtirekha Mohapatra, Dean and Principal of Pabitra Mohan Pradhan Medical College; and Prof. Dr. Debaprasad Mohanty, Dean of Government Medical College & Hospital in Phulbani.
