Bhubaneswar: The Housing & Urban Development Department on Friday issued a notification proposing to declare the entire Chatrapur Notified Area Council (NAC) in Ganjam district as a “Smaller Urban Area.”
The proposal has been made under the provisions of Article 243-Q of the Constitution of India, read with Section 4 of the Odisha Municipal Act, 1950 (Odisha Act 23 of 1950).
According to the notification issued by the State Government, several key factors were taken into account before making this proposal. These include population size and density, revenue generation for local administration, the proportion of non-agricultural employment, and the overall economic significance of the area.
The move indicates that Chatrapur is witnessing steady urban growth and may soon transition to a more structured urban governance system.
Classification as a “Smaller Urban Area” generally brings an area under enhanced municipal administration, allowing for better urban planning, improved civic amenities, and access to government-sponsored urban development schemes.
The government has invited objections and suggestions from residents and other affected persons. Such representations must be submitted in writing within 30 days from the date of publication of the notification in the Odisha Gazette. All objections and suggestions should be routed through the Collector and District Magistrate, Ganjam, and will be duly examined before a final decision is taken.
