Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Government has called upon organisations, institutions, individuals and legal experts to take the lead in securing a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for the iconic Cuttack Dahi Bara.
Replying to a question in the State Assembly, MSME Minister Gokulananda Mallick clarified that the government cannot directly apply for a GI tag under existing provisions. Instead, applications must be filed by eligible entities such as registered associations, producer groups or organisations.
The Minister urged stakeholders to come forward and initiate the process, emphasising the cultural and commercial significance of the popular street food. He assured that the state government would provide all necessary support and cooperation to facilitate the application once a competent body takes up the initiative.
The move is seen as part of broader efforts to promote Odisha’s unique culinary heritage and enhance market recognition for traditional products.
