Odisha Govt To Provide Affordable Homes, Begins Pilot To Make Bhubaneswar Slum-Free

Bhubaneswar: In a significant move toward making the state capital completely slum-free, the Odisha Government has announced that it will now provide actual homes—not just land—to eligible slum dwellers.

The initiative aims to ensure secure, dignified housing for thousands of families living in informal settlements across Bhubaneswar.

Housing & Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra informed the government has prepared an extensive plan to transform the capital’s urban landscape. As part of the initiative, affordable houses priced between ₹14 lakh and ₹50 lakh will be made available to citizens.

Mahapatra announced that as a pilot project, the government has already constructed 90 two-bedroom (2BHK) houses, marking the first step toward mass-scale delivery of low-cost housing units. These houses will be allotted in the first phase to slum dwellers, he added.

“We are making arrangements to provide homes to as many common people as possible,” the minister said. “Designs for additional housing units have been finalized, and the project will be expanded further based on its success.”

The government plans to directly construct and deliver affordable homes rather than allocating land parcels, thereby ensuring faster and more planned urban development.
