Bhubaneswar: Odisha Governor Braj Mohan Ram has called for integrated steps for overall development of the tourism sector and to make the state’s destinations popular at national and international levels.
Participating in the inaugural ceremony of the 7th Odisha Tourism Summit held in Bhubaneswar on Friday, the Governor emphasized developing tourism infrastructure, creating new investment opportunities and extending benefits to people in remote areas.
“Every district of Odisha has its own tourism potential, natural resources, historical monuments and rich cultural heritage. These resources need to be identified and promoted in a well-thought-out manner at national and international levels,” he said.
Congratulating the Hotel and Restaurant Association of Odisha (HRAO) and organisers for bringing government, industry and investors on one platform, the Governor hoped such discussions would help translate Odisha’s tourism potential into policy initiatives and concrete action plans.
Describing tourism as a major driver of economic growth, employment generation and entrepreneurship, he said the sector contributes to growth of ancillary sectors like hospitality, transport, handicrafts, local cuisine, agriculture and small businesses. Tourism development should create livelihood opportunities for locals while protecting cultural identity and heritage, he said.
Referring to Odisha’s attractions, the Governor highlighted Lord Jagannath Dham, Konark Sun Temple, ancient temples of Bhubaneswar, Chilika Lake, the vast coastline, Buddhist heritage, tribal traditions and wildlife. He said steps taken by the state government to improve tourism infrastructure, attract investment and develop new destinations, along with various Central schemes, would create new opportunities. Improved connectivity, quality accommodation, modern infrastructure, skilled manpower and effective digital marketing are needed to make Odisha an attractive destination.
He also stressed on development of eco-tourism, spiritual tourism, adventure tourism and MICE tourism. The Governor underlined the need to maintain balance between tourism growth and environmental protection and called for active participation of local communities, stating that responsible tourism will create opportunities for youth, strengthen local economy and give wide recognition to Odisha’s cultural heritage, contributing to Viksit Odisha and Viksit Bharat vision.
MP Aparajita Sarangi, Consul General of India in Auckland Dr Madan Mohan Sethi and former Chief Secretary Gokul Chandra Pati also graced the function. HRAO President Dr J K Mohanty delivered the welcome address.
