Bhubaneswar: Prompt coordination by Odisha Police and doctors helped save the life of a 10-year-old boy who sustained a critical abdominal injury in a bicycle accident in Puri district after an 80-km green corridor was created for his emergency transfer to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Brahmapur.

The Class V student, identified as Prabhudatta Jena, was returning home from school on Wednesday when he fell from his bicycle at Patharakata village under Krushna Prasad police station limits. During the fall, the brake rod from the bicycle’s handlebar pierced his lower abdomen, leaving him critically injured.

Residents immediately shifted the boy to the Krushna Prasad Community Health Centre. After assessing his condition, doctors advised that he be referred without delay to MKCG Medical College and Hospital for specialised treatment.

Acting swiftly, Odisha Police established an 80-km green corridor from Krushna Prasad to Brahmapur, ensuring uninterrupted movement of the ambulance through the route. Despite evening traffic, the ambulance covered the distance in about one hour and 45 minutes.

Police also alerted the authorities at MKCG Medical College and Hospital in advance so that the medical team could remain prepared before the patient arrived.

A specialised team led by Dr. Manas Ranjan Sahu, Head of the Department of Paediatric Surgery, was constituted to handle the emergency. Soon after the boy reached the hospital, doctors began treatment and performed a surgery that lasted around two and a half hours.

The child has since been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for observation and is expected to remain under close monitoring for the next three days. Doctors said his condition is currently stable.

Highlighting the operation, Odisha Police said on its official X handle that when every second mattered, personnel acted without hesitation to create the green corridor, ensuring the ambulance reached the hospital without delay. The police said the initiative reflected its commitment to protecting lives beyond maintaining law and order.

Doctors attributed the successful outcome to the boy’s timely arrival at the medical college, made possible by the coordinated efforts of the police and medical teams.
