Bhubaneswar: Odisha has experienced an active monsoon season so far, with as many as 11 low-pressure areas forming between June 1 and the present date, informed the India Meteorological Department.
According to IMD data, the state has recorded 1,269.7 mm of rainfall during this period — 21 per cent above the long-period average. Despite the overall surplus, two districts — Gajapati and Nabarangapur — have registered deficient rainfall.
Meanwhile, the IMD has indicated that weather conditions are turning favourable for the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon. The retreat is expected to begin from parts of western Rajasthan around September 19, 2026, and gradually progress across northwest India thereafter. If the current favourable conditions persist, the monsoon is likely to withdraw completely from Odisha by the second week of October.
At present, a cyclonic circulation continues to linger over the northwest Bay of Bengal and neighbouring regions. Under its influence, light to moderate rain is expected across the state over the next two days.
On the other hand, the IMD centre in Bhubaneswar has dismissed recent media reports suggesting the possible formation of three cyclones over the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea between October and December.
IMD made it clear that that no such forecast has been issued. Weather models are being continuously monitored, and timely updates will be provided if any significant weather system develops.
