Bhubaneswar: The Assembly Standing Committee has recommended the formation of an Opera Censor Board in Odisha to prevent obscenity in opera shows.
The board will ensure that opera performances adhere to guidelines and regulations, maintaining the integrity of Odia drama culture. The proposed Opera Censor Board will monitor content in stage drama, including storylines, direction, and acting, to prevent obscenity and maintain standards in opera performances.
To promote Odia opera culture, the committee has also recommended several initiatives. These include the Odia Opera Festival, a week-long festival showcasing Odia jatra performances, and the Jatra Award, which recognizes established Yatra artistes’ contributions to Odia drama culture. Additionally, a multilingual music competition will promote Odia music and folk drama, while old theatre restoration will preserve Odia cultural heritage. Statues should also be erected to honour notable personalities from Odisha.
The Culture Department has prepared an opera guideline, pending government approval, to regulate opera content and maintain performance standards.
