Bhubaneswar: The election to the post of Mayors and Corporators for three Municipal Corporations, and Chairpersons and Councillors for 106 Municipalities/ NAC in Odisha is to commence on March 24, informed State Election Commissioner Aditya Prasad Padhi on Wednesday.
For the first time in the State, Mayor and Chairperson election will be held directly. In view of this, two EVMs will be used in separate compartments at each booth. One for Councillor/Corporator and other for Chairperson/Mayor.
While the notice for the polls will be issued by the Election Officer on February 28, the nominations can be filed from March 2 to 7, including Government holidays, and the scrutiny of nominations will be done on March 9.
The polling will be held on March 24 with the counting of votes and declaration of results on March 26. The election of Vice Chairperson and Deputy Mayor will be held on April 7 and 8 respectively.
Over 27 lakh voters will be exercising their franchise at 3,030 booths under 1731 wards in 106 Municipalities/ NACs. Similarly, over 14.26 lakh voters will be exercising their franchise at 1407 booths under 168 wards in three Municipal Corporations.
The final Ward-wise Electoral Rolls for the General Election to Urban Local Bodies were published yesterday and both hard and soft copies have been handed over to the political parties.
The Model Code of Conduct will be in force from today till the end of counting on March 26, Padhi added.
