Odisha Witnesses Extremely Heavy Rain; Banki Records Highest 210mm In 24 Hours: IMD

Bhubaneswar: Odisha witnessed widespread heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in the last 24 hours, with Banki in Cuttack district recording the highest 210.0 mm, according to data released by the Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar at 8:30 am today.

As per the IMD bulletin, two stations across the state reported extremely heavy rainfall, while 10 stations recorded very heavy rainfall and 69 stations logged heavy rainfall.

The intense showers were spread across several districts, with Cuttack, Angul, Dhenkanal, Jagatsinghpur, Kandhamal, Nayagarh and Keonjhar figuring prominently in the list.

The highest rainfall of 210.0 mm was recorded at Banki in Cuttack district, followed by 206.0 mm at Angul town and 195.0 mm at Talcher,  both in Angul district.

Tigiria in Cuttack received 171.0 mm, while Parjang in Dhenkanal recorded 142.0 mm. Other areas that received substantial rainfall include Harabhanga in Boudh with 140.0 mm, Bhapur in Nayagarh with 132.8 mm, Hatadihi in Keonjhar with 131.8 mm, and Altuma in Dhenkanal with 120.0 mm.

Coastal districts also reported heavy downpours. Puri Town recorded 89.5 mm of rainfall, while Pipili in Puri district received 81.0 mm. Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak and Khurda too featured in the list with rainfall figures ranging between 70 mm and 115 mm. The heavy rainfall comes at a time when Rath Yatra is underway in Puri, drawing lakhs of devotees to the pilgrim town.

In view of the wet weather, the Met department has advised people to stay updated with official forecasts, avoid waterlogged roads, and take necessary precautions during thunderstorms.

Authorities have urged devotees and residents in low-lying areas to remain cautious and follow advisories issued by the local administration.
